Women want more sex with partners

Extra-marital affairs are OK, but premarital sex is definitely not. Sex is more welcome anytime, anywhere than ever before. But the experience between the sheets isn't as exciting or as frequent as it used to be.

These are just a few of the findings of the eighth India Today-AC Nielsen-Org Marg sex survey, which seeks to understand how the perceptions and expectations of women have changed between 2003 and 2010.

Seven years after it first probed female sexuality in 2003, the survey conclusively establishes that sex is more important to women now than it was in 2003-with 72 per cent of those surveyed asserting its place in their lives, compared with 66 per cent in 2003.

The frequency of sex, though, is not at all a flattering comment on the Indian libido. Forty-nine per cent women said they had sex between once a week and once in two months.

The percentage of those who have sex more than once a week (25 per cent), meanwhile, has dipped from 30 per cent in 2003. Conducted on 5,369 respondents (2,664 women and 2,705 men aged 18 to 60 years) across 11 cities-including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Ludhiana, Ahmedabad and Patna-the 2010 survey establishes that women want better sex and that it's time for men to find out how inadequate they are.

Men are clearly not setting their women on fire, with sexual excitement levels among their better half plummeting. A mere 17 per cent women find their sex life thrilling, against 21 per cent in 2003. The percentage of those who are contented with their life between the sheets has also fallen from 41 per cent seven years ago to 35 per cent. Women are also fantasising less-35 per cent, against 44 per cent in 2003.

Clearly, the men have a lot to do to make their women happy. "What men do not realise is that women can also have days when they want to break something, pick their noses, eat a gigantic steak or roam around the house in a torn T- shirt," writes Kalki Koechlin on the survey findings.

Stressing the need for men to let go of their ego and need to provide, possess and protect their women, Kalki offers tips for men to get their act together.

"Sometimes romance is as simple as a man staying by our side when the whole world sits in judgment," she says. "At times, it means physically letting us leave and sort out problems." As a testament to the growing aspirations of women, three of four women say it's important to be financially independent for a healthy relationship.

It was women in Ludhiana (96 per cent) who voiced the need for financial independence the most, followed by 84 per cent in Ahmedabad and 82 per cent in Delhi.

The definition of financial security has also changed. Commenting on the survey findings, Vijay Nagaswami, psychiatrist and author of The Fifty-50 Marriage, writes: "In the past, financial insecurity for woman referred to either the insufficiency of the man's income-generating capability or his financial profligacy... Today, when financial independence is becoming the norm for women, the term has come to reflect the lack of financial transparency between partners." Couples should begin work on their relationship with the issues of financial security, he says.

Women's sexual preferences remain old-fashioned. Shaved chests are a no-no, with 26 per cent women rating a hairy chest a huge turn-on. The penis ranks next (23 per cent) as the part of the male anatomy that women find the most attractive.

The man remains perched firmly on top of his woman, with 61 per cent women preferring the missionary position (an 8 per cent increase from 2003). And it is the man who controls bedroom dynamics, as is evident from the 76 per cent who expect their women to satisfy their needs.

Only 11 per cent women reported having sex for their own pleasure. Clearly, the opposite sexes in India have a long way to go before they hit the G-spot.

Sex and our cities

Sex survey: Malaysians not getting off enough

Malaysians do not have enough orgasms, according to the latest findings of the Durex Sexual Wellbeing Global Survey.

Only 44% of Malaysians manage to achieve an orgasm almost every time they have sex. Malaysians however are ahead of the Singaporeans, of whom only 36% usually manage an orgasm.

Gender-wise, 62% of Malaysian males almost always climax during sex while women get a raw deal, with only 25% almost always achieving orgasm.

Globally, the leaders are the Italians, Spaniards, Mexicans and South Africans who are most likely to climax every time with 66% usually managing to hit the sweet spot.

Least likely to achieve an orgasm are mainland Chinese and people from Hong Kong (both 24%), followed closely by the Japanese (27%).

Reproductive and sexual health specialist Dr Mohd Ismail Mohd Tambi said that while orgasms are not the be all and end all of sex, regularly achieving orgasms improves emotional and overall well-being.

"If you want to have an orgasm, it is important that you allow yourself to surrender to the good feelings you are experiencing. Relaxation is crucial," he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail said work worries should also be left outside the bedroom, and couples needed to have protected and uninterrupted time.

The survey also found that 86% of Malaysians who have frequent orgasms feel sexually at ease with themselves.

The survey was conducted among 26,000 people in 26 countries of which 1,026 were Malaysians. They were questioned on key aspects of their sex lives such as health, education, beliefs, attitudes to sex and social circumstances.

Over a third of Japanese couples skip sex: survey

TOKYO - More than a third of married couples in Japan have stopped having sex, many of them because they are too tired or just can't be bothered, a government-backed medical researcher said on Wednesday.

About 37 percent of couples surveyed this year by Kunio Kitamura, head of the Japan Family Planning Association, said they had not had sex for at least a month, compared with 32 percent in 2004.

The most common reason, given by a quarter of the males surveyed, was being too tired after work, while 19 percent of women said sex was too much of a hassle, he told Reuters.

"It's a question of work-life balance," Kitamura said in a telephone interview. "This is not something that the individual can tackle alone. The people who run companies need to do something about it."

His written survey involved 647 men and 821 women aged up to 49, who are married.

The trend could have serious consequences for Japan, whose falling birthrate and aging population are continuing headaches for the government.

The average number of children born to a Japanese woman in her lifetime was 1.34 in 2007, compared with 2.1 in the United States in 2006.

Kitamura said doctors may also be partly to blame for Japan's negative attitudes toward sex during pregnancy or after giving birth.

He is set to report to the Ministry of Health on his findings next year.

76% of Chinese Hard to Reach Orgasm: Durex Sex Survey

The Chinese might be top global performers when it comes to business, but during sex they appear to be struggling to reach their peak.

Couples from China and Hong Kong are the least likely to reach orgasm during sex, while the Italians and Spanish claim to have no problems climaxing, a global sex survey showed on Tuesday.

Less than a quarter -- 24 percent -- of those surveyed from China and Hong Kong were able to achieve an orgasm every time they had sex.

Italy, Spain and Mexico tied for top place, achieving orgasms 66 percent of the time, said the Durex Sexual Wellbeing survey, which polled 26,000 people in 26 countries.

The French, famous for their romantic overtures, came in at a middling 48 percent of the time -- the global average, the survey said.

Other Asian countries such as Japan and Singapore ranked poorly with those polled saying they only reached orgasm 27 percent and 36 percent of the time respectively.

Of those who manage to climax, the Japanese were the least satisfied with the intensity of the orgasm while Mexicans and Brazilians said they were the most satisfied.

Women climaxed less than men, with 32 percent saying they reached the peak every time they had sex, compared with 63 percent of men.

Factors that enhanced an orgasm included delaying climax, longer foreplay time and having a strong emotional relationship, the survey said.

The survey also found that while men preferred to orgasm with a partner, women achieved an orgasm more easily through masturbation.

"If you want to have an orgasm, it's important that you allow yourself to surrender to the good feelings you are experiencing," said Kevan Wylie, a sexual health expert, in a statement.

Singapore women 'forward in sex'

Singapore women are the most likely to initiate sex in Asia, Thais enjoy spanking while South Koreans rate poorly on fidelity - so says a new Asian sex survey.
The Time Asia magazine survey, released on Monday, polled men and women from five Asian countries on their most intimate behaviour.

The number of people interviewed was not disclosed.

Singaporeans were found to be the most faithful
Women in Singapore were found to be the most forward, with 18% saying they initiate sex.

Singapore also appeared to be the most committed to monogamy, with 67% of men on the island saying they had never been unfaithful.

In contrast, 47% of South Korean men said they had been unfaithful "several times" along with a quarter of the women.

South Koreans also appeared to have the greatest penchant for pornography, with 57% of men admitting to reading, watching and surfing porn.

Up to 37% of Thai men said they liked to be spanked, along with a third of women.

In contrast, only 2% of Hong Kong men said they enjoyed being spanked.

Only 5% of Hong Kong men felt sexy
Hong Kong painted a poor picture in the survey - only 5% of men felt they were sexy, compared with 55% in the Philippines and 48% in South Korea.

Couples in Hong Kong also gave conflicting ratings on sex - 55% of men said they always had great sex with their wives, but only 34% of women polled agreed.

The survey also found the missionary position was the top sexual position among Asians.

Thais gay-friendly

Virgins were found to be a dying breed in the survey, but that didn't stop 78% of Filipino men wanting to marry one.

Thailand was found to be the most gay-friendly, with 47% of those polled saying they had no problems with homosexuality and 6% of Thai women admitting to having had a same-sex encounter.

In South Korea, only 23% said homosexuality was acceptable.

Female students in China more open towards sex: survey

A new survey shows that more than half of female graduate students in Shanghai show an understanding attitude toward other girls who are kept as lovers by rich men or who work at night clubs.

The survey was conducted by the journalism school of Fudan University in June with more than 900 female students at the city's 17 universities who graduate this year. About 40 per cent were from Shanghai, while the rest were from other parts of the country.

Researchers said the students also showed a free and open attitude toward sex and marriage.

Sex survey reveals Asians holiday habits

A new love and sex survey has revealed some interesting facts about Asians.
Conducted by hotel experts Mr & Mrs Smith, the Sexier-Than-Sex Survey monitored the love habits of guests from Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Here are some facts and figures.

1. Asians seem to be luckier in love with 41% saying there was enough romance in their lives while only 34% Australasians felt the same.

2. Asians are no longer as conservative as before with more Asians opting for a “sexy hotel stay” to check out their potential partners. 22% Asians preferred this to a day at the beach or going to the cinema.
3. But Australasians led in the one-night-stand category with 72% admitting to hooking up with a stranger. 41% Asians admitted to this.

Indian Sex Survey

This could come as a shocker for those resisting introduction of sex education in Indian schools.

Premarital sex has been found to be common among young men but a higher percentage of women aged 15-24 years have had sex before reaching the age of 15.

A large scale youth survey conducted under the aegis of the Union health ministry in the six states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu has thrown up some interesting findings.

Around 15% of young men and 4% young women interviewed admitted to having pre-marital sex. Shockingly, 24% of the women had premarital sex for the first time before age 15 compared to 9% men.

Premarital sex was also found to be more common in rural India.

According to the report prepared by Population Council, Delhi, and International Institute of Population Sciences, Mumbai, youth in rural areas were also more likely than those in urban areas to have initiated a pre-marital romantic relationship at age 15 (29% compared to 17% among young men, and 46% compared to 31% among young women).

Around 6% of rural youth compared to 1% of urban youth had their sexual debut before age 18.

Over 26% of young men and 40% of young women reported that they had spent time alone with their first romantic partner at age 15 or below.

Many of the pre-marital sexual experiences reported by the youth were risky. Around 25% of young men and 21% of young women reporting pre-marital sex had sex with more than one partner. Moreover, consistent condom use was limited only 13% of young men and 3% of young women reported condom use in all pre-marital encounters.

While sexual relations were generally unsafe across all the six states, some notable state-level differences were found. For example, among young men, multiple partner relations were reported by 32% in five of the six states, but by relatively few (14%) in Rajasthan.

Releasing the study, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said young people in India face multiple risks associated with sexual and reproductive health that include pregnancy related morbidity and mortality, delayed abortion seeking, unmet contraceptive need and lack of knowledge to make informed decisions.

"One-third of the total reported AIDS cases are below the age of 29 years. More than 8% of young people in the age group of 15-19 years have experimented with sex either before or outside marriage. And only 37% of young men and 45% of young women knew that a woman can get pregnant at first sex. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that India addresses the challenges of youth effectively," Azad said.

The surveyors spoke to nearly 51,000 married and unmarried young males and females for this youth study.

The survey found that significant minorities of young men and women had made or received a proposal for a romantic relationship (23%) before marriage, with one in four such relationships progressing to becoming sexual.

The first reported romantic partner was typically a neighbour or friend (reported by 33% of young men and women), a fellow student or colleague (reported by 30% of young men and 16% of young women) or an acquaintance from outside the village/neighbourhood (reported by 25% of young men and 19% of young women).

Around 27% of young women compared to 9% of young men reported that their first pre-marital partner was a relative.

As far as consensuality of first sex is concerned, a larger percentage of young men than young women reported that their first experience of pre-marital sex was mutually consensual (76% versus 66%).

One in seven young women (14%) reported that their partner had forced them to have sex the first time.

Asians losing virginity later -- global sex survey

LONDON -- People in Asian countries lose their virginity at a much older age than those in the West, according to a worldwide study of sexual behavior and contraceptive use published Tuesday.

On average, age for first having sex was 19.25, according to the study "The Global Face of Sex", compiled by Durex Network, the social marketing arm of SSL International, which manufactures Durex condoms.

Malaysians were the oldest to lose their virginity at 23 years old, followed by Indians (22.9) Singaporeans (22.8), Chinese (22.1), Thais (20.5), Hong Kongers (20.2), Nigerians (19.7) and Japanese (19.4).

Austrians were the first to lose their virginity at 17.3 years old, followed by Brazilians (17.4), Germans (17.6), New Zealanders (17.8), Australians (17.9) and Americans (18.0).

But despite waiting longer, Malaysians came top among those who said they were the most ready for sex (41.5 percent), followed by the Dutch, Greeks, Americans and Australians.

In contrast, Japanese, Nigerians, Thais and Hong Kongers said were the least ready for first sexual experience, with less than 13 percent saying they were comfortable with losing their virginity when they did.

Meanwhile, more than a third of Nigerians (37.5 percent) said they felt pressured into losing their virginity -- by far the highest percentage.

The west African country also came out bottom for condom and other contraception use when they first had sex, compared with Poland and Greece, who were the most careful in both categories.

Overall, Durex's study of 26 countries found that although contraceptive use had increased in the past 50 years, three in 10 people overall still reported that they did not use protection when they first had sex.

Teenagers aged 16 to 19 having first sex are eight times more likely to have used contraception for their sexual debut than people now aged 65 or older and women were more likely than men to take precautions.

People were less likely to feel pressured into having sex or having sex earlier if they lived in an urban area, had a better education or higher income, the study found.

And contraceptive use increased among those who talked more openly about sex and sexual health with their family or partner, as well as those who felt ready to lose their virginity.

Singapore Girls Under 16 Having sex

In Singapore, girls aged between 12 and 14 are considered victims of statutory rape. Cases involving girls below the age of 12 are investigated as rape. Offenders can be jailed for up to 20 years, and fined or caned.

Under the Women's Charter, sex with a girl aged above 14 but below 16 is termed 'carnal connection'. If found guilty, offenders can be jailed for up to five years and fined up to $10,000 for this crime. While females are the majority of victims in underage sex cases here, the law has been amended to protect males as well.

The latest police figures show that 310 girls below the age of 16 were caught engaging in underage consensual sex last year - nearly 45per cent more than the year before. Put against the number from five years ago - 163 - the jump is even starker. In most cases, these boys are also teenagers, though they are sometimes in their 20s or even 30s. There was jump in the number of statutory rape cases - from nine in 2003 to 63 last year.

Of 721 children screened by counsellors after their parents had sought beyond parental control orders last year, nearly a quarter, or 171, were found to have already experienced sex in one form or another.

A survey carried out last year by the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) among 500 girls under 16 indicated that a majority of these girls were seeking emotional fulfilment rather than a physical connection; some felt compelled to give in to the demands of their partners to prove their love.

The survey revealed that the two main reasons for having sex were a desire for a closer connection with their boyfriend and being pressured by their boyfriend into giving themselves.

A study on young people's awareness and usage of contraception commissioned last July by drug company Bayer Schering Pharma found that about three in 10 of the 240 respondents had had sex, but only 54per cent had used contraceptives. One in six believed that urinating or exercising after sex would prevent pregnancy.

Family Planning Association said it handed out survey forms to 2,713 randomly selected people, and received responses from 636 men and 773 women in November 2006. It gave no margin of error. In a similar poll taken two years ago, 35 percent reported having no sex for a month.
Japan came last in a 29-country study of sexual satisfaction published by the University of Chicago last year, with a mere 25.7 percent of lovers expressing satisfaction in bed.
The country was also in last place among 41 nations in a 2005 poll by condom manufacturer Durex, with people having sex just 45 times a year compared to a global average of 103.

More Japanese schoolgirls having sex than boys

More Japanese high school girls are having sex than boys, even though girls express more regret about losing their virginity, a survey found.

Some 39 per cent of girls and 30 per cent of boys in their final year of high school said they had had sex, according to a survey of some 10,000 high school students by a federation of parent-teacher associations.

Among students in their first year of high school, which has three years in Japan, 15 per cent of girls and 12 per cent of boys had had sex, the survey said.

While nearly 60 per cent of boys said they were "glad with the experience," only 40 per cent of girls responded positively, it said.

The survey found that girls who had few conversations with their parents were more likely to have sex than girls who enjoyed close family relations.

"Amid an influx of information on sex, the students have been prodded to have sex and ended up feeling confusion and regret," said Masako Kihara, an assistant professor of social epidemiology at Kyoto University.

Sexuality is little hidden in much of urban Japan, with pornography easily accessible and sexual services overtly advertised.

A 1999 government survey showed some 13 per cent of high school girls have been paid by older men for dates or sex.

The Great Indian Sex Survey

New Delhi. Like a responsible media unit taking care of public ‘interest’, Faking News too has come up with a sex survey revealing the most secret and sensuous details of sex lives of Indians. Some men admitted popping in Viagra to improve performance, women thought it crazy to swallow.

Young men found porn movies informative, young women found them weird.

Many young women wondered why their boyfriends insisted on not taking off their stockings or footwear during sex.

Indian women were still very secretive about oral sex, very few of them opened their mouth.

Women continued to fake orgasms and men sizes.

It was found out that while in western countries kissing breasts was taken as a mark of respect by the woman, the Indian woman desired to be kissed on their buttocks to be conveyed that respect.

The average duration of sex was unknown, but everyone, especially the husband, claimed it to be higher than their neighbors.

Many more couples were talking sex than before, but not amongst themselves.

The favorite place by couples to have sex continued to be the bedroom, but the fantasy choices were varied – parliament, Pakistan, Qutub Minar, on a boat, on a railway berth – in that order.

Around 69% of the wives suspected their husbands of having an extra marital affair. 99% of the husbands suspected their wives of not trusting them enough.

Cheating husbands were confident that their wives would forgive them for adultery as they didn’t have a choice.

Fast sex turns India on

New Delhi: Quick but satisfied. In the jet-setting age of fast redemption, this is what sex life is like for Indians.

A global survey conducted by leading condom-maker Durex finds that in the land of Kamasutra, fast love is the way to go and number 13 seems to be all about getting lucky and well, horny.

According to the Durex Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey, Indians have sex the quickest, devoting an average of 13 minutes to each session as opposed to the global average of 18 minutes.

The survey spread over 26 countries with a sample size of more than 26,000 people found that Indians were the third most satisfied with 61 per cent respondents happy with their sex life and women remain on top, literally. As compared to 58 per cent of Indian men, 66 per cent of Indian women were satisfied with their sex lives.

However, the age-old problem of the Big O still remains with only 46 per cent of Indians reporting a regular orgasm.

The findings of the survey conducted across 26 nations are not short of curious details. While two-thirds of Indians call their sex lives exciting, 55 per cent recognise the importance of introducing a little experimentation in bed.

While Indians might not prefer talking about sex in public, they certainly seem to enjoy more than their global counterparts.

The survey found that Indians love to make love as many as 130 times a year, way above the global average of 103.

At the global level, the average of sexual satisfaction climaxed at 44 per cent with Nigerians being the most satisfied at 67 per cent and Japanese - at only 15 percent - being the least satisfied.

The Greeks were found to be the most amorous, having sex 164 times a year, followed by Brazilians who clock in at 145. The Russians and Poles share the third position at 143.

The survey also speaks of teen sex and reveals that while teenagers all over the world maybe having sex less often than their elders, but the time is made up by sessions that are twice as long.

Each teen sex session averages close to 40 minutes and has a higher satisfaction rate too!

The survey questioned more than 26,000 people about every aspect of their sex lives to chart out global parameters of sexual well-being.

The study was based on key aspects of health, general wellbeing, education, beliefs, sex and relationships, attitudes to sex and social circumstances.

It also identified ways in which Indians could boost their satisfaction levels even further, with almost half of all Indians (47 per cent) craving for more love and romance.

Conducted by Harris Interactive, the participating countries included Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Greece, Hong King, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands , New Zealand, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to UK-based sexual health expert Dr Kevan Wylie, who has been involved in the study, the survey enables identification of key drivers of sexual wellbeing and confirms the role it plays in physical and emotional health.

''The survey highlights how vital it is for everyone, especially men, to not only consider their sexual health but to talk to their doctor about solving problems to improve their sex life and that of their partner,'' Wylie was quoted by agencies as saying.

Sex surveys: India Today, Outlook in court

...Recently, another sex survey had rankled the parents of many college girls in Chandigarh. The survey, which claimed that 33% of college girls (which is one in three) in Chandigarh are sexually active raised the hackles of many students and parents, who felt that the survey cast them in a poor light. "From now, the boys will start thinking that many of the girls are available for sex. If not one, then another," said a furious college student.

The survey has got the parents upset too. Blasting the Urban Health Centre for conducting the survey is one thing - the risk of wayward ways highlighted by the survey on their children is another.

According to the Chandigarh sex survey, 33% of the girl students admitted to having sex, while 28% refused to comment. The implication is that the figure could be higher than 33%.

The surveyors drew criticism for publishing the survey results. The Health Centre later said that the idea was not to highlight licentious behaviour in campuses, but to find out the awareness levels on contraception and safe sex among adolescents. Many college principals too trashed the results of the survey.

However, this is not the first time that sex surveys have pushed up eyebrows. In one of its earliest editions (in 1995) Outlook published a sex survey which clearly attracted new readers. As recently as 2003, both news magazines again came up with sex surveys. And now, just two years after that, the surveyors are out in the street again. Not just India Today and Outlook, many others too have tried to board the sex survey caravan before. The way the latest case proceeds may be an eye-opener for all.
