This could come as a shocker for those resisting introduction of sex education in Indian schools.

Premarital sex has been found to be common among young men but a higher percentage of women aged 15-24 years have had sex before reaching the age of 15.

A large scale youth survey conducted under the aegis of the Union health ministry in the six states of Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu has thrown up some interesting findings.

Around 15% of young men and 4% young women interviewed admitted to having pre-marital sex. Shockingly, 24% of the women had premarital sex for the first time before age 15 compared to 9% men.

Premarital sex was also found to be more common in rural India.

According to the report prepared by Population Council, Delhi, and International Institute of Population Sciences, Mumbai, youth in rural areas were also more likely than those in urban areas to have initiated a pre-marital romantic relationship at age 15 (29% compared to 17% among young men, and 46% compared to 31% among young women).

Around 6% of rural youth compared to 1% of urban youth had their sexual debut before age 18.

Over 26% of young men and 40% of young women reported that they had spent time alone with their first romantic partner at age 15 or below.

Many of the pre-marital sexual experiences reported by the youth were risky. Around 25% of young men and 21% of young women reporting pre-marital sex had sex with more than one partner. Moreover, consistent condom use was limited only 13% of young men and 3% of young women reported condom use in all pre-marital encounters.

While sexual relations were generally unsafe across all the six states, some notable state-level differences were found. For example, among young men, multiple partner relations were reported by 32% in five of the six states, but by relatively few (14%) in Rajasthan.

Releasing the study, Union health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said young people in India face multiple risks associated with sexual and reproductive health that include pregnancy related morbidity and mortality, delayed abortion seeking, unmet contraceptive need and lack of knowledge to make informed decisions.

"One-third of the total reported AIDS cases are below the age of 29 years. More than 8% of young people in the age group of 15-19 years have experimented with sex either before or outside marriage. And only 37% of young men and 45% of young women knew that a woman can get pregnant at first sex. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that India addresses the challenges of youth effectively," Azad said.

The surveyors spoke to nearly 51,000 married and unmarried young males and females for this youth study.

The survey found that significant minorities of young men and women had made or received a proposal for a romantic relationship (23%) before marriage, with one in four such relationships progressing to becoming sexual.

The first reported romantic partner was typically a neighbour or friend (reported by 33% of young men and women), a fellow student or colleague (reported by 30% of young men and 16% of young women) or an acquaintance from outside the village/neighbourhood (reported by 25% of young men and 19% of young women).

Around 27% of young women compared to 9% of young men reported that their first pre-marital partner was a relative.

As far as consensuality of first sex is concerned, a larger percentage of young men than young women reported that their first experience of pre-marital sex was mutually consensual (76% versus 66%).

One in seven young women (14%) reported that their partner had forced them to have sex the first time.

Study Finds Condom Use Is Increasing

Women and their partners in the United States are increasingly using male condoms when they have premarital sex for the first time, which may explain why teenage birth rates have declined in recent decades, according to a new government survey of contraceptive methods.

Use of Contraception in the United States: 1982-2008
The proportion of women who used some form of contraceptive the first time they had premarital sex rose to 84 percent in the survey compared with 55 percent before 1985. Most of the increase came from the growing use of a male condom, used by 72 percent of women at first intercourse compared with 34 percent before 1985.

Contraceptive use varied greatly by the education level of parents. About 84 percent of women whose mother had a college education used contraception the first time they had sex compared with 53 percent of women whose mothers did not finish high school.

The numbers come from the National Survey of Family Growth , which is conducted every six to seven years by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The most recent survey was carried out from 2006 to 2008, and its results were released for the first time Wednesday.

The survey has long been used to help answer why half of all pregnancies in the United States are unintended, a far higher proportion than is found in many other industrialized countries. One clear reason is the relatively high share of unprotected sex that occurs in the United States.

“There are some pieces of good news in here,” said Bill Mosher, a statistician with the National Center for Health Statistics, “but what struck me was how persistent some of these patterns are. And that they’re different from some other countries’.”

About 40 percent of births in the United States in recent years are to unmarried women. In addition to about 4 million births that occur annually in the United States, there are 1.2 million abortions and an estimated 1 million miscarriages and stillbirths.

Eleven percent of sexually active unmarried women who are not looking to become pregnant do not use contraceptives, the survey found, with a far higher share of black women failing to use contraceptives than white, Hispanic or Asian women.

Among women who did not use a contraceptive before an unintended pregnancy, the most common reason they gave was that they did not think they could get pregnant.

Religious teachings forbidding contraceptives are almost universally ignored in the United States, since 99 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 44 who had sex at least once have used some form of contraception. The most popular method in the United States is the pill, used by 10.7 million women between the ages of 15 and 44, closely followed by sterilization, used by 10.3 million women.

The typical pattern among women is to rely on a male condom at first intercourse, the pill to delay birth and sterilization once a woman has had all the children she wants. Indeed, 54 percent of sexually active teenage women who used contraception chose the pill compared with just 11 percent of women over the age of 40.

The share who had ever used a contraceptive patch rose to 10 percent from 1 percent in 2002, but that share is likely to decline since warnings about risks caused a drop in its popularity.

The IUD is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, increasing to 6 percent of those who use contraceptives from 2 percent in 2002. Even among teenagers, nearly 4 percent of those who use contraceptives chose an IUD. There are now more than two million IUD users in this country.

Black and Hispanic men are far less likely to have had a vasectomy than white men, the survey said.

In European countries with far lower birth and abortion rates, women are much more likely to use the pill or an IUD and much less likely to use sterilization than women in the United States.

night.

Most married women would rather go to sleep, read a book or watch a film than have sex

If you have ever turned to your husband and said 'not tonight, darling' then fear not - you are definitely not alone.

Most married women would rather go to sleep, read a book or watch a film than have sex, a survey has found.

Sixty-three per cent said they would choose hitting the pillow straight away, putting on the TV or a opening a book over sex.

However, it was not all bad news with 37 per cent saying there was 'nothing else' they would rather do than make love to their husband.

Experts have blamed the lack of enthusiasm in most women on laziness from both partners and an increasing amount of distractions in the modern world.

Relationships therapist Ian Kerner said: 'You may say you're happy with your sex life, but in the end, if night after night you're consistently picking a book, TV, Facebook, digital networking, any distraction that's out there over intimacy with your partner, in the long run, your relationship could become vulnerable to things like infidelity.

'So you have to put sex at the centre of your relationship.'

The survey by American motherhood website iVillage also found that over-familiarity may play a part. Of the 2,000 women surveyed, more than 80 per cent described their sex lives as predictable.

Some 67 per cent said that the position was too repetitive, whilst 56 per cent said the time of day it happened was the same every time.

An alarming 45 per cent could only say at best they were 'somewhat happy' with their sex life and 62 per cent said they fantasise about having sex with somebody who is not their husband.

A third of married couples have not tried anything new in a year or more and just over half will have sex even if they don't want to out of a sense of marital obligation.

Mr Kerner added: 'I think your sex life is sort of like going to the gym. You got to get back into the routine and it's a little hard at the beginning, but once you do it, it's like try it, you'll like it. You'll want to keep going to the gym.'

Liz Zack, editor of pregnancy and parenting at iVillage, said the key was to 'know your spouse. You certainly have to know your spouse.'

But she added: 'Who can't relate to that state, when sometimes you and your partner, your bio rhythms are just a little bit off, and sometimes you would rather finish your book than get to it.'

Mr Kerner said a lot of women fantasise during sex about someone other than who they are having sex with.

'Fantasy is a taboo and in the privacy of your own imagination "everything goes",' he said.

Kiwis prefer sex to sandwiches

A survey looking into lunchtime habits has found New Zealanders seem to prefer sex to sandwiches.

The online survey commissioned by Domino's Pizza has found one third of respondents have had sex while on their lunch break.

Nearly 9,000 people took part in the survey.

About 70% say their most memorable lunch break involves a sexual experience.

Others have got engaged, discovered they were pregnant, witnessed a car accident, been tattooed and played practical jokes on colleagues on their lunch break.

The survey found three quarters of those surveyed took lunch breaks of just 30 minutes or less and the survey found 66% of us experience 'food envy'.

The survey also found that more than half of workers enjoy their lunch in their company's lunch room and that a large number often eat at their desks, in the car or on the run.

When it comes to what Kiwis are eating for lunch, 58% predominantly make their lunch at home. The most popular home-made meals appear to be last night's leftovers and sandwiches with a diverse range of fillings.

Of those that purchase their lunch, the majority spend $10-20 each week on everything from gourmet sandwiches and pies to sushi, salads and fast food.

Many respondents described their favourite lunch as one they haven't had to prepare themselves.

As for what else Kiwis do on their lunch break the most common responses were reading, doing a crossword, going to the gym, surfing the internet, visiting social networking sites, running personal errands and going shopping.
